Cognitive Development

Cognitive Development is the area of growth related to the workings of the brain. The primary cognitive goals in early childhood are related to strong thinking skills, such as problem solving and making connections. This is also where we build skills in language and math. Young children learn best through authentic, in-context experiences, so here are some of the ways we build language and math skills in my classroom:

Math: Weighing, measuring, making comparisons, sorting, counting, exploring shapes and building with blocks.

Literacy: Telling stories, encouraging conversation, exploring phonemic sounds, authentic writing practice (such as signing artwork) and increasing letter recognition.
